Professional TeacherMany Spanish words are of Arabic origin - What's your favorite?
The fact that the Arabs were so long living in the Iberian Peninsula has made many of the words we use today have Arab roots. No less than 4,000 terms of Spanish have their origin in this language, such as
arroz
aceituna
guitarra
jaqueca
máscara
rincón
sandía
tarea
taza
azúcar
naranja
baño
aceite
zanahoria
jirafa
daga
chisme
jinete
barrio
almohada

Roughly Half of my Spanish ancestors were forced out of Spain after the final Reconquista..
They came to Colonize Nuevo México with Oñate in 1598, but had left Spain before that, living in North Africa and the Canary islands..
The Muslim Rulership of Spain was somewhat more Tolerant than the Catholic Kings..

In English, we have a few, though not as many as Spanish. I think most or all of them have Spanish cognates. Alcohol, coffee, albatross, alfalfa, almanac, caravan, chess (ajedrez) and rook and checkmate, cotton (algodón), magazine, sherbet and sorbet, orange and lemon and tangerine.
And of course the names of most stars are Arabic. Aldebaran, Alioth, Algol, Deneb, Fomalhaut, Mizar, Rigel, Spica, Vega.
