Professional TeacherWhat is more important, to be relatable or to be unique?
There are two traits at the opposite of the spectrum which can play a role in a person’s success. One is being “relatable” and the other one is being “unique”. Being relatable is a quality that is associated with “charisma” and some people say that it is a skill that one needs to develop, especially when you are working with people. Some of the most popular celebrities are not unique but relatable.
Another quality is being “unique”, these are people who stand out in a crowd. People who can be easily distinguished, based on their looks, their style or even manner of speaking or writing.
It is a good characteristic I think and some of the most successful people are also unique. Imagine if everyone wants to look the same or act in the same manner. What kind of world will we have? Boring...extremely boring.
Some people say that “balance”is needed. We need both, it is not good to be too relatable nor is it good to be too unique. I think that if I would need to choose between the two, I would choose uniqueness as a more important trait. But one must know in which aspect of their life, they must apply it. One must know their strength and know how to work with it.
Most social media marketers would say that “relatability” is more important but I guess that there is no perfect answer for this and would always depend on the person and circumstance.

Relatability can be very abstract. The author talks about living with one arm and how that’s not relatable, but many people can relate to having something that holds them back and makes them stand out. So, in a way, uniqueness itself is a relatable trait. I don’t need to lose an arm to feel for someone who has lost one of theirs.

@Abdullah You have a point of course. In my case, I see it as two opposite poles. Being unique is relatable if you are in the same room of people of similar characteristics.
It is abstract but it also depends on what niche you can use any of the two or aspect of life.
There are better articles written about relatability.
