Community Tutor or Professional Teacher
I am new to italki and I am looking for a teacher, and I was wondering if anyone knows the difference between between a Community Tutor and a Professional Teacher? What are the experiences of learners? Is there a difference in the amount or quality of the teaching that people are paying for?

In principle the distinction is this : a professional teacher has had training and holds a qualification in teaching a foreign language, and may earn his or her living by doing so. They can be expected to have lesson material prepared, and to be able to explain and clarify grammatical issues, etc.
A community tutor has not been trained to teach in this field, and it is not his or her main occupation. They have a good working knowledge of how their language is used, but cannot necessarily be expected to deal with grammar, etc.
In practice, here on Italki, these roles often overlap, with students of languages working as community tutors for experience of teaching. Many community tutors have a very good knowledge of the mechanics of the language they teach, as well as how it is used. Furthermore, their rates are usually lower than those of professional teachers.
