Community TutorContronyms
Who knows what a contronym is? This is a fun quiz to see who can find some contronyms... In other words, words which have two meanings which are opposite in character.
E.g rock - firm, solid, immovable.
Rock - to move something back and forth.
They are very rare, so let's see who else can come up with some. I had great fun trying to think of some.
You can also think of some in your own language and explain them to us.

I knew them as autoantonyms. I can think of "to temper" which can be "to harden something" or "to soften something" depending on the process.

Sometimes two meanings are not exactly opposite, but something about...
In Russian for example - "затопить" - a verb with a number of meanings

light the hearth, oven

pour water onto the surface of smth.

So water and fire - these are opposite things, but not very literally...
