Using Había
Can I use había without the perfect past tense. For example: En el año 1776 no había otro paíse solo colonias en el continente Americano. Is this correct? If I need the perfect past tense, how would I use it with this sentence. Thank you.

Could you write the sentence in English? I'm not sure what do you want to say...
You can use only había, or you can use había +participle like ----> había jugado

If I am not mistaken, "hubo" is more appropriate, since you've specified a year ("1776").

Examples:

Había mucha desigualdad en el pasado.

Hubo mucha desigualdad en 1923.

Note that I'm not a native Spanish speaker, so this explanation might possibly be completely wrong :)
