在汉语里, 但是/可是/而是这三个词有什么区别? 如何给外国人用英语解释这三个词的区别? How to explain the differences of the three words "但是/可是/而是" in English?

这三个词都是表达转折的连接词. 我同意kaly的解释, 在许多情况下,"但是", "可是" 是可以替换的. " 但是" 转折的语气更重一些. "而是" 一般用在"不是...而是...." 如: 我不是学生,而是老师.

lol，而是的解释蛮好的。
我觉得但是跟可是几乎可以通用，比如：我想跟你一起去，但是（可是or 但 or 可）我很忙。
在特定句式虽然。。但是。。中，我的习惯是基本都用但是或但。

但是: however e.g. I would like to go with you, however, I'm busy that day
可是: but e.g. I would like to go with you, but I'm busy that day.
而是: instead it is e.g. It's not that I don't want to go with you, instead it is because I'm broke.
可是: but e.g. I would like to go with you, but I'm busy that day.
