Do you know the secret dialect of English? The one that is completely unique to English and is only known to native speakers in the UK and the US? ARRRGGGH!! That's right mateys, it's Pirate Talk! GAR!!

One day, all the English speakers need to call up their international friends on Skype or MSN and start speaking Pirate Talk to them. All your friends who think they are fluent or advanced in English will be amused, confused and most likely utterly frustrated to hear you talking about "walking the plank" and "scurvy dogs" and using the phrase "shiver me timbers" in every other sentence. Of course, using the term "ARRRRGGGGH!" constantly will probably start to get on their nerves very quickly so be careful!

Here's a sentence in Pirate Talk and what it translates to in plain English:

Pirate: Ahoy, me mates and me went t' a bar last eve for some ales. GAR!

English: Last night, my friends and I went to a bar for some beers.

Keep in mind that Pirate Talk can not be used with other languages. We tried it with Korean but it just did not work very well.

So get out there and convert all your Asian, Indian, and French friends (or whomever) to speaking in Pirate Talk when they speak English. In the end, they will thank you for it! ARRRRGGGGGGH!

Well, Gary
Your explanation is a starting lesson in language of pirates.
For what I could understand perhaps at "italki bar" would be a good place to go for the next lesson :).

Hey João!
To be honest, I don't know the historical background to the somewhat unique language of pirates. All I know is that it's great fun to do - especially if you've already downed a few beers! Sometimes alcohol is actually the prerequisite! Seriously, how could anyone sober stand listening to "ARRRRRGGGGGH" over and over again for more than a few minutes!

I grant you freedom to spell "ARRRRGGGGGH" however you please. Pirates are far more interested in looting ships than spelling!

Hi desetjedi
When I read your explanation about that secret english only known by natives from UK and USA, I thought, at first, about cockney.
Apart from cockney be spoken only in London (if I am not wrong) do you see any correlation between these two "secret english languages".
By the way, how many "a" "r" en "g" can be put in the word aaarrrgh? I notice that you first put 3 end after you put 4/5. Can I put 5 , 6 or 7 or 0? aaarrrgggh....BAR. Could I apply the same rule on the (word?) BAR? Thanks for your first lesson .

Thanks you for explanation and they really helped me to know what you said. I like your way in expressing. You showed an active spirit and good imagination. For me Pirate is only living in western country tales with secret and romantic lengedry. I hope they ate not only seafood because I can't live without rice and vegetables.
