Honesty and being polite at the same time???

honesty means telling the truth but sometimes it gets complicated with being polite, like can you honestly tell someone that he or she is not good looking enough ??? or can you honestly tell someone that he or she has a bad breath? or she/he is not fat even if obviously he/she is fat???if  you did it, then someone might be offended and say thats not polite,..but youre just being honest...so thats why sometimes its really confusing...i think you cannot serve two masters at the same time in this kind of situation.

It is a good question.

Well, you cannot be both polite and honest, most of the time.

I would rather be honest.

You may be silent at that time.  So you will not be rude and a liar.

I agree with Adri, you can say more politely or more honestly depending on the relation you have with someone. But if you're asked about something sincerely, i think even if it can sound rude the best is to give a true answer. If it's not a question i try speaking about something else. :D

I think it requires some social tactics to be polite. Pointing out somone's negative aspects in public can definately hurt his/her feelings. Maybe you could hint something about it in a nice, compassionate, not-so-serious way when you talk to the person alone. That way, I assume you are not lying to the person. However, I have to admit, it takes a great balacing act to be upfront and nice at the same time. Your wording, tone of the voice, vibe, facial expression, timing and many other factors come into play, and if you get one of those wrong, you could end up being called a rude person.
