Why is English so popular?

I know there is the obvious reason: Business. But, when you look at all the beautiful languages around the world, I don't understand why you'd pick English over, say, Russian or German. I, as a native English speaker, cant hear what English sounds like to a foreigner, but I know the sound isn't as nice as French or Italian. I say that if you're doing a language for pure fun, like myself, then don't learn English. It's just my opinion :) What do you reckon?

To thirstybear, you'd either say "your angle" or "your point of view". Never combine them.

To Mallory, if you think English grammar is confusing... Well, German's going to be quite entertaining for you.

haha, an interesting topic...

In my view, and as what can see from the people around me, those who's learning English didn't ever think from your angle of view :)

English is mandatory here, in most of the Chinese schools, and, you know, China has the greatest population in the world... so you can imagine how it is oil on the flame now...

And,... I think, in comparison with Deutsch, English is a little bit easier to learn...

You have the obvious reason. Why did you need to continue asking the question, then?

Britain has had the most successful empire in the modern world. When you colonize half of the planet, and then your colonists all develop into extremely powerful and influential nations in their own right, with most of the world's scientific, economic, and technological advances coming out of English-speaking countries for multiple centuries, with English-speaking countries having a complete oligopoly on the Industrial Revolution, winning most major wars since the 1700s (unless they decide to fight themselves, anyway), and owning most trade routes until the advent of planes, how could there have possibly been another lingua franca? No other language has had a chance; English is the new millennium's equivalent to Versailles French or Athenian Greek or Ottoman Arabic. The only languages with enough speakers to surpass it are Hindi and Mandarin, and those languages are almost entirely isolated in their countries of origin for the time being.

In fewer words, when the countries that speak English have complete control over the world's military resources, scientific literature, economic networks, technological industries, and entertainment complexes, and they control over one fourth of all available landmass on the planet, it's not remotely shocking that English is the current dominant language of Earth.

To Ivan

I completely agree with you. Some accents make English sound absolutely horrid. I agree that Russian and German sound beautiful, but I like French and Italian too. I think it's a completely different culture where the sound of your words isn't judged as much as what you are actually saying.
