# Negation in Arabic (1)

#  ليس (laysa)  is a word used to negate singular nouns and adjectives.

 

For example: 

 ٌعلي ليسَ طالب    -- {Ali laysa talib(on)     ------       Ali is not a student. 

Ali is a male proper noun. So, we used ليس . 


* ليس  (laysa) is also used for inanimate masculine singular, like  الباب ( the door) . For example:


البابُ ليس مُغلق --- { al babo  laysa  mogh laq}  -------   The door is not closed. 

الولدُ ليس طويل  ---- { al waladu laysa taweel}  --------- The boy is not tall

#  ليست  (laysat) is like ليس  (laysa)  but FEMININE 

 

For example:

أسماء ليست مشغوبة -------- {Asma laysat mashghoolah}  ------  Asma is not busy.

- Asma is a female proper noun.

- هذه ليست مريم  { hathehi  laysa  Maryam)  ------------  This is not Maryam.

 

 

* It is also used with inanimte feminine nouns (bth singu. and plur)

الورقة (the paper) is a singular feminine inanimate noun   . For example:

 

الورقة ليست صغيرة جدا  ---- { al waraqah  laysat  saqeerah jeddan}  -------    The paper is not very small.

we don't say (ali laysa talibon)

the correct one is (ali laysa taliban)علي ليس طالبا

or we can say (ali laysa betalibin)علي ليس بطالبِ

always when we use (laysa) the name after it ends with (an)
