Another Song You Can Learn English From

This is another song you can learn English from, even if it is from the 1980's. I've provided the lyrics so you can refer to them.

The music video is here:

"Manic Monday" by the Bangles

Six o'clock already,
I was just in the middle of a dream.
I was kissin' Valentino
By a crystal blue Italian stream.
But, I can't be late
'Cause then I guess I just won't get paid.
These are the days
When you wish your bed was already made.

It's just another manic Monday.
I wish it were Sunday,
'Cause that's my fun day,
My I-don't-have-to-run day.
It's just another manic Monday.

Have to catch an early train.
Got to be to work by nine,
And if I had an aeroplane
I still couldn't make it on time,
'Cause it takes me so long just to figure out what I'm gonna wear.
Blame it on the train,
But the boss is already there.

It's just another manic Monday.
Wish it were Sunday,
'Cause that's my fun day,
My I-don't-have-to-run day.
It's just another manic Monday.

All of my nights,
Why did my lover have to pick last night
To get down?
(Last night, last night).
Doesn't it matter
That I have to feed the both of us?
Employment's down!
He tells me in his bedroom voice
"C'mon honey, let's go make some noise".
Time it goes so fast,
(When you're having fun).

It's just another manic Monday.
I wish it were Sunday,
'Cause that's my fun day,
My I-don't-have-to-run day.

It's just another manic Monday
I wish it was Sunday,
'Cause that's my fun day.
It's just a manic Monday.

Grammar & Phrases Contained In This Song:

1. kissin' : In English slang, "ing" is often shortened to 'in. The "g" isn't pronounced. Examples:

a. I'm workin' on this essay.

b. The girl (that) he was huggin' is Mary.

c. Flippin' the book over, he read the title on its cover.

2. When you wish your bed was already made : She is late because she has to attend traditions like making sure your bed is made before you leave home.

3. 'Cause : This is the slang form of the word "because". Another slang form of "because" is 'cos. Examples:

a. I can't go to the party tonight 'cause I have to write a paper for my Spanish class.

b. I am so pissed off 'cos he "borrowed" my laptop without asking!

4. my I-don't-have-to-run day : Here "I-don't-have-to-run" is a sentence acting like an adjective. Note that you have to spell it with hyphens. "My I-don't-have-to-run day" means "the day on which I do not have to do anything". "To have to run" means that you have stuff to do as an obligation (work, errands, etc).

5. C'mon honey, let's go make some noise : "Let's make some noise" means "let's have sex". "Having fun" also refers to "having sex". So, they were up so late having sex / "fun" that they didn't notice how late it had become.

Work Related Words:

Manic Monday : We call it Manic Monday because it Monday is the day you have to come back to work and you run around crazy because there is so much that you have to do.

Hump Day: This word means "Wednesday". Wednesday is considered the middle of the work week because Americans typically work Monday through Friday in an office, as opposed to in retail. A hump is the highest spot on a camel's back and marks the "middle" so I am guessing that is where it originated. Some examples:

a. I am so glad that it is Hump Day. Only two more days left!

b. Ugh. It is still only Monday. I can't wait for Hump Day to get here!

c. I wish it were Friday, but at least today is Hump Day.

TGIF: This is an abbreviation which means "Thank God It Is Friday." Most people don't use it anymore, but it can still be heard and people will understand you if you use it. My sense is that if you use it, people kind of think you are lame because it sounds like something you'

Oh, I remember that song well from my younger days. I used to sing along but I don't think I understood what all the lyrics meant.

Haha, why would you say sorry because of that, I've never said that I like her song :)) I hate her music too. SMH :)) the thought just came across my mind when you said about Friday :D

Well, I learn some from American movies, like F**k, bang, wrestle, screw, hump, do the nasty, get it poppin, do it doggy style, scroggin... But, well, you know, those aren't politely ways to say, for example, How would you say it with your girlfriend? Or just simple Let's have sex?

Oh man, I can not stand either of Rebecca Black's songs. LOL A lot of people here really hated her music too. Ugh. I wouldn't wish that garbage on anyone. Hehehehe Sorry. :)

Yes, there are 100's of ways to say it. :)

Haha, I'm just thinking then you would post the song "Friday" by Rebecca Black : ))

Not only that, she also had the song called "Saturday" already. Just known about it when I checked youtube : ))) OMG, smH!!!

yEAH, I am a big fan of 80s and 90s stuff, not only music, I also love movies, games from that time :)

Not my taste of my music, but Great song!

Just curious, Do American have other slangs for the "having sex" in addition to "let's go make some noise" or "let's have fun"?

April 14, 2014

It is 1:50 PM on Monday now actually. Hence why I am posting about "Manic Monday". HAHAHAHA! Why can't Friday be here already?! :(
