'A' and 'the' have distinct meanings. They're not used arbitrarily with specific words like genders are in some languages. Changing 'a' to 'the' in a sentence and vice-versa changes the meaning of the sentence. 'Cut a cake' and 'cut the cake' are both correct, but they mean very different things. If you know what 'a' and 'the' mean, you'll be able to figure out which one tobuse in a sentence.
