Was é o passado do verbo "to be" na forma singular* (I was, he was, she was, it was) = Eu fui/ estive, ele foi/ esteve, ela foi/ esteve.
*com a exceção de "you" - você
Were é o passado do mesmo verbo "to be," mas na forma plural ou para "you" (You were, we were, they were) = Você foi/ esteve, nós fomos/ estivemos, eles foram/ estiveram.
Alguns exemplos :
I was here yesterday. = Eu estive aqui ontem.
You were not here yesterday. = Você não esteve aqui ontem.
He was here ten minutes ago. = Ele esteve aqui há 10 minutos.
We were out last night. = Estivemos fora de casa ontem a noite.
Espero ter ajudado um pouco. A pergunta não foi muito específica.
