I feel that probably you are right in that we don't hear about train accidents anymore.  The rails are safer, and people know to stay off the tracks when a train is coming. If you are traveling overland, and the train goes where you need to go, then might be preferrable to take the train.  But if you are going overseas, then unless you like boats, it is better to take a plane.
