When you making a new friend you are just getting to know them.  you have no commitment to them and you dont know them so you dont share anything with them.  Everything you say is new and everything you hear is new.  So it is all very interesting learning about someone.   

An old friend is someone you have history with.  You have spent time with them and they have gone through good and bad times with you.  You have shared things that no one else might know about.  You need to be sensitive to things they like or dont like.  You know about them and you never want to hurt their feelings.  You need to spend time with them in order to keep that relationship.  Your investment of time and effort is much more than you would spend with someone on a new friend.

True story. Some friends disappear after a while if you don't live close, others turn out to be completely different than what you originally thought.

Certainly, I totally agree on the point to maintain the old, long term relationship with friends is more difficult than to make a friend. A real friend or even an intimate friend is very hard to find because in most instances, they have to know something precious in your spirit not just on the face of it.  Why do you not ask yourself: if you really understand yourself? probably not, probably that is nothing more than an illusion.
