Motivation in language learning. Please all feel free to express yourselves and comment if you wish! :))) Feedback is always welcome. I want to just express how important I think it is that we encourage our students to be better learners. Lets face it, learning dry grammatical rules like English present perfect is a little boring! :) So knowing how to motivate a student and each other as learners is vital. We should give feedback to our learners on their attempts and encourage them too. Often teachers don't praise enough! :) It seems strange considering that self confidence is vital to intrinsic motivation, so encourage your students..but praise only when it is deserved, otherwise students will not see the value in your words. If your a teacher and you have a weaker student don't ever single them out and ask them questions putting them on the spot! - Imagine how you would feel. Instead, pair them with a stronger partner for pair/group work. A few ideas as a learner to keep yourselves motivated; 1) find a teacher or language partner of similar level who is approachable, genuine and empathic - it will be more fun (and competitive) this way! 2) Have a passionate reason for learning your language. When or if you start to find it tough, remind yourself this underlying passion and reason. 3) Find films/cartoons of intrest to you to learn your target language in. 4) If you do find your motivation sliding, use a psychological technique called "cognitive reframing." It means just seeing a situation from a slightly different point of view.
