Japanese Lesson for beginners 3-3 (3) お国/会社はどちらですか?
つづきです。
---
Yamada: あさこさん、そちらの方は?
Asako: あ、こちらは<your name>さんです。<your name>さん、こちらは山田さんです。
Yamada: はじめまして。お国 は どちら ですか?(おくに は どちら ですか)
---
国 (くに)= a country.
お is a prefix which is used to express politeness.
---
So what would you answer?
You: 国は<your country>です。
---
yea that's right. You can't put "お” when you're mentioning to your country.
---
Yamada: そうですか。学生(がくせい)ですか?
You: はい、<school's name> の学生です。
--
Would you like to ask him something?
What about his occupation?
Its alright, nobody will think you're nosy. Everybody will understand that you're practicing.
--
You: 山田さん も 学生 ですか?(がくせいですか?)
Yamada; いいえ、会社員 です。(かいしゃいんです)
--
What about changing 国 and 会社, then?
--
You: 山田さん の お会社 は どちら ですか?
Yamada: You can't put ”お” before 会社, I'm afraid. Thanks for paying your respect anyway. :-)
You: はい、じゃあ、会社はどちらですか?
Yamada: よつびし です。
You: よつびし は 何 の 会社 ですか。(よつびしはなんのかいしゃですか)
Yamada: よつびし は エレベーター の 会社 です。この エレベーター も よつびし の 製品(せいひん:product)です。You'll see next time why I used this expression here:-) You're going to see ties, aren't you?
Asako: あ、5階です。山田さん、thanks for your guide!
<your name >さん、行きましょう。(いきましょう)(means lets go)
では、また!

As far "お", it must be hard for you to tell which noun can be with or not. You don't need to be so nervous about it. 国はどちらですか?or 国はどこですか? is fine as well. Just be aware of that what is "お” for. It is enough.

Why you can't put "お” before 会社(かいしゃ) is that there's another way to call 会社 politely, which is "御社(おんしゃ)" or ”貴社(きしゃ)”. It is a mainly used for business. You don't need to remember them so far!
