英文课: "A cup of drink"
Someone asked me why it was incorrect to say "A cup of drink", this is my very detailed response that I would like to share:
Drink has two uses, one as a noun (Can I have a drink of water?) and as a verb, (What are you drinking?) (I want to drink some tea) (Last night I drank coffee and couldn't sleep.) If you are using 'drink' as a noun, the problem is that you are specifying a quantity (an amount).
Here are some examples of how to correctly specify an amount of 'drink'
A cup of tea
A cup of milk
A glass of juice
A glass of water
A bucket of Coca cola
A thermos of Sprite
You will notice that each time I had to specify what the 'drink' was. I cannot say 'A glass of drink' or 'A bucket of drink'. You may be asking yourself, why? Well, it's actually pretty simple. 'Drink' is itself a measure of quantity (amount).
A drink of water
A drink of juice
A drink of milk
So how much is 'a drink'? It's unspecified, such as a 'glass' could be huge, and it could be tiny. So when you say, 'A cup of drink', you are really saying
A cup of glass
A glass of bucket
A bucket of thermos
A thermos of cup
So how can you say "A cup of drink" correctly? There are several ways.
Your full fragment, "make a cup of drink" can be written as:
Make something to drink
Make something like Milo or tea to drink
Make something hot to drink
Make milo or something else to drink
Make Ribena, Milo, or something else to drink
You will notice that I do not use the word 'drink' as a noun, but as a verb. *If* you insist on using drink as a noun, you can use it as below
Make a drink of Milo
Make a drink of Coffee
Make a drink for myself
Make a drink for myself so that I'm not thirsty
And so on
