Unique Cultures and Traditions in Tana Toraja: Baby Grave Kambira.
The graves in Toraja are famous because of theirs uniqueness. In Toraja, there are not only graves stones, but there is also other unique cemetery. It is named Baby Grave kambira.
Baby Grave Kambira is a big Tarra Tree. In there, only infants who have died before their teeth grow are buried in a hole of Tarra’ tree who made in the trunk of the Tarra Tree. After the baby is put in that hole, it is closed with woven fibers.
The Tarra Tree is chosen as a place to bury babies because it has a lot of tree sap, which is considered as a substitute for breast milk. Burying the baby in the Tarra Tree is a symbol that the babies who have died reverted back to their mother's womb, in the hope that there will be no more babies died again.
A baby’s funeral in the Tarra Tree is carried out by Toraja residents, Alik Todolo followers (They believe in ancestors). The baby who is implanted in a tree’s hole is not wrapped with anything, so it is completely like returning to the their mother’s womb.
The placement of the baby's body on the Tarra Tree is according to the community's social strata. The higher the status of the baby's family, the higher he/she will be put on the Tarra Tree. That baby is also placed in the direction of the her/his family’s residence.
After decades, the bodies of the babies in the Tarra Tree will blend with the tree. And it will became one of the uniqueness attractions for tourists.
