Confusing words Has the word "affection" different meanings? I know, this word describes for example a feeling of liking. Can I also use "affection" to talk about sickness, disease or illness? Have all these words the same meaning?

Confusing words

Does the word "affection" have different meanings?
I know this word describes, for example, a feeling of liking someone or something.
Can I also use "affection" to talk about sickness, disease or illness? Do all these words have the same meaning?

Affection can sometimes refer to psychological disease, but that usage is rare and mostly archaic. You are probably thinking of affliction.

Many thanks for these explanations. It's very helpful. I found that word "affection" in an online dictionary. There, they translated it like illness. So I was a little confused. Online dictionaries are very helpful, but not always correct.

The word "affection" has many meanings but the word that means "illness or disease" that you are thinking of is "affliction". Affection usually means love, attachment or emotion, but according to the context the meaning can change a bit.
