Both make sense, in Italy we use both; if I had to find a difference, I'd say that
<em>Il mio nome è Ian </em>sounds more formal/you would use it while doing a presentation, while
<em>Mi chiamo Ian </em>is what I'd normally say/expect to hear to/from a friend of my age :)

Both are correct but mean slightly different things: "Il mio nome è Ian" translates as "my name's Ian" while "io mi chiamo Ian" is the equivalent of "I'm called Ian"
