在家靠父母,出门靠朋友
It means exactly what it is said, everyone is dependent on someone in life.
人非 独行 ~ Man does not walk alone (or Man is no solitary creature), within he depends on his parents, without on friends.

It basically says that when you are at home, you rely on your parents. But when you leave home, you depend on your friends. You can basically use it whenever your friends help you with something, as an acknowledgement that friends are indeed helpful when family is not around.
Say, your friend just lent you 2000 yuan to buy something you need. Then you can say that idiom to him.
