I compagni lo convinsero a rubare. His friends convinced him not to steal
but
Devi convincerti della sua sincerità. You have to convince yourself of her honesty.
Si convinse di quanto accaduto. He/Her convinced himself of what happened.

In Italiano la forma "convincere qualcuno di fare qualcosa" è scorretta. Il verbo convincere regge solo la preposizione "a".
Quindi si dice "convincere qualcuno a fare qualcosa.."
