What is the difference between 鞋and 鞋子?

Here, 子 is used as a dimiminutive, like English's kitchen --> kitchenette. In your example, it also conveys a compliment.  Until the end of 1912, small feet (for women) is considered a beauty (hence the practice of foot binding).  It can also be as a sort of endearment.

In other cases, other meanings of 子 applies.   子 = Son of Heaven, i.e. the emperor although one can argue he is "little heaven". With terms 子, 孔子 etc , it is an honorific term for a person.

Well, they have the same meaning, both mean : shoe. But 鞋子 is too formal that we Chinese seldom use it in our daily life since that might sound a bit weird,at least in the north of China where I live.I believe that people from South of China might use 鞋子 more often and some areas in South of China even have a different accent for that word. But 鞋 on the other hand is a common word that most people use when they mean: shoe or shoes( Please mind that unlike English, both the single and plural are the same ,both 鞋)。Hope my answer is helpful:)
