Education in Ukraine
The Ukrainian educational system is organised into three levels: preschool education, secondary education, and higher education (also called postsecondary). Let's talk about each of them.
Preschool education is optional nowadays. Children from 2 to 6 years old can attend kindergarten, where they are taught the basic skills of arithmetic<strike>s</strike>, language, arts, and some social skills like teamwork. Before entering <strike>the </strike>school, children can also attend special classes which are run by the schools.
After the age of 6 (in some cases 5 or 7) children
must attend secondary education,
which is <strike>required and </strike>free. There are several types
of institutions of secondary education:
Middle school [of]
general education
Lyceum
Gymnasium
College (for special
secondary education)
Middle school usually combines primary (4 years), secondary (5 years), and senior (2 years) school levels. Some of them combine<strike>s</strike> only primary and secondary levels, which is the minimum requirement for middle schools. Despite the names, students usually study at the same school <strike>institution </strike>throughout their primary, secondary, and senior levels. In addition to school classes, students can attend different out-of-school classes, such as sports school, language classes, <strike>courses</strike> etc.
After the basic education certificate (primary and secondary levels - 9 years), students must take an exam. Then they have a choice: either to enter senior level or enter <strike>the </strike>college, where they will study additional special subjects.
By the end of their secondary
education, all students must
undergo external independent testing. They can choose up to
four test<strike>ing
</strike>subjects (Ukrainian
language and history or
math<strike>s</strike> are
required; in total students
have to choose at least three
subjects). After getting the results of testing students have
their marks as final school exam and points which they can use to
enter the university.*
Higher education is free only for students
with high scores, but there
is a quota which is limited.
Some students are eligible for a scholarship (a basic scholarship is about $46 per .... and a top scholarship is $64 per ....). Scholarships may be reduced based on poor grades?
The first degree is a bachelor's (4 years). To obtain any degree, students have to study for a certain period of time and must defend a thesis <strike>as final</strike>. After a bachelor's degree, students can obtain a master's degree. For this they have to pass an external independent test of English. Based on these degrees, students have all the necessary skills for employment, but some of them continue studying for a PhD <strike>degree</strike>.
