Maybe you can understand it better, if you add the word "假如" or "如果" in front of "...的话",because both "假如" and "...的话" mean "if",and one of them can be neglected in one sentence,but sometimes "...的话" let the sentence sounds more fluent and native. ：）Notice:~~This is just my own opinion!
