What's the difference? They both seem to translate to 'student'

Podrías usarlos como sinónimos en la mayoría de los casos. La única pequeña diferencia es que el alumno estudia en un centro de estudios (universidad, colegio, instituto, etc.) y un estudiante no siempre estudia en un centro de estudios (por ejemplo, puedes estudiar español en tu casa en forma independiente con libros, podcasts o viendo videos).

Apoyo lo siguiente:
Un estudiante es una persona ‘que estudia’, independientemente de si es autodidacta o si tiene un profesor, mientras que un alumno es, según el DRAE, un ‘discípulo, respecto de su maestro, de la materia que está aprendiendo o de la escuela, colegio o universidad donde estudia’, es decir, que en el término alumno está implícita la relación respecto de quien le enseña.
