I was working on a practice, which Asked to fill in the blank. As it is shown in the screenshot. How come the answer is predict ? I selected “speculate” but the answer told me no, and it is predict.

'Speculate' is an intransitive verb. This means that it does not take a direct object. The correct verb here has a direct object - 'markets'. So the answer cannot be 'speculate'.

Hi Dimin In terms of business, analysis and future earnings or predictions, you perhaps follow some charts and financial analysis so you have some more concrete info to follow or predict what the future earnings for example might be. when you speculate you are more in the dark , maybe have options possibly resulting in opposite outcomes( could go either way) or perhaps more of a guess or personal opinion without foundation. You can also here …. There have been some speculation that this and this happened….. as it has not been confirmed yet Hope it helps 👋🏼
