To sleep is a general term that refer to the action of sleeping, no matter how long. A nap however refers to a short sleep you take outside of your night of sleep, usually during the day.

A nap tends to be a much shorter sleep. Sometimes in the daytime. My dad used to like a quick/short nap after lunch!
