What is the original meaning of “classified” and why does it mean “secret” now? I can’t find its etymology. Thank you in advance!

“Classified” literally means arranged in classes or categories. Historically, documents / information was classified (categorized) by the degree to which it must be kept secret, for example, “confidential”, “secret”, and “top secret”. Unclassified means not following into one of those special categories.
