Also, depress can mean to literally push something down, not necessarily a person. Ex: "Airline stocks were depressed in the early days of the pandemic."

oppress: keep (someone) in subservience and hardship, especially by the unjust exercise of authority.
depress: make (someone) feel utterly dispirited or dejected.
