What does “bury one’s face in the pillow until one can sleep” mean?
Why do you bury your face in the pillow? I feel that it has a figurative meaning, but I really don’t get what it is.

It usually does have a negative figurative meaning. When you “bury your face in your pillow,” it can mean that you’re super tired, disappointed, or upset depending on the context.
