Animism was popularized in the 19th century by British anthropologist Edward Burnett Tylor. He defined animism as the belief that spiritual essence exists in animals, plants, objects, and even natural phenomena. At its core, animism proposes that the world is alive with spirits. Trees, rivers, rocks, mountains, and even tools or buildings are believed to have their own life force or consciousness.
