With 了: you are describing a status and/or an action that you are about to complete.
Without 了:it can be a statement.
我要去上课了。I’m leaving for my class.
我去上课了。I went to class already.
我要去上课。I want to go to class. Or an an answer.

Here 了 means nothing, but it uses for completing the sentence, like a tone. if you remove it, it won’t change the meaning
