Small = petit(masculine) petite(feminine)
Girl = fille
Friend= ami (M) amie (F)
But when I wana say I have a girlfriend, the translation is
J'ai une petite amie.
Instead of
J'ai une fille amie.
Is there a reason why the actual full translation is different?

Yes. Those expressions are idiomatic in both English and French. A girlfriend is *not* just a friend who happens to be a girl, so there's no reason to translate it literally.
