My homework "でも、おじいさんとおばあさんは お金がなかったから、お正月のおもちもありませんでした。" = But, since they lost their money, they doesnt..??

But, since they (the old couple) didn't have (enough) money (to buy), they couldn't prepare (even) rice cakes for the new year.
We eat Mochi, rice cake, during the new year period. And usually we prepare more special foods for the new year. This old couple didn't have money to buy (or make) even this most basic food for the new year.

But, since my grandparents didn't have the money, there wasn't any New Year Omochi, either.
Think:
Christmas pudding
Easter eggs
New year omochi
Some might say "rice cakes", but I beg to differ, since omochi is something very special and doesn't resemble cake in the slightest. It's more like a sweet dumpling.

Im doing homework and need to translate this... i think it means:
But, since they lost their money, they doesnt have any rice cakes either for the new year.
Is that correct? i wanna know the exact translation caus im not really sure...
