When do you say "Right back at you."?

I'd personally say when someone compliments you:
"You're a great friend!"
"Thanks! Right back at you!"
You can see where I'm coming from as you can insert different compliments there, but in all honesty I don't hear many people using this phrase, people usually say 'you too' :)
