What does "We're off to a great start." mean?

"We're off to a great start." = we have made good progress so far in our journey or project.. However if you say "We're off to a great start." in a sarcastic tone, then it implies that no attempt has been made to start a project.

It is related many times to sport events ,you always hear them say: " The so and so team is off to a great start."
