If someone "knows their way around", they are knowledgeable regarding whatever subject or field is under discussion. The phrase suggests the person is streetwise.

It means you know the city or town very well, every street, every shop. It can be used in all situations that can be expressed like a map.

I think the speaker suggests he/she knows how to tackle(way) the situation not necessarily be the formal way (around) .
