"Residue" is a Latin-based word that refers to whatever remains after something else has been removed, for example, a substance left in a container after the liquid has evaporated. A "remnant" (also Latin-based) has the similar idea of a portion remaining of a larger group or thing, but often refers to pieces of cloth, though not necessarily. For example, the remnants of several different fabrics are used to make quilts.
