"ver-" ist oft eine Verstärkung.
Das Haus brannte. = Es gab ein Feuer.
Das Haus verbrannte vollständig. = Es ist nichts mehr von dem Haus übrig.
"brennen" ist intransitiv, "verbrennen" kann intransitiv und transitiv ("etwas verbrennen") verwendet werden.

Er verbrannte die Suppe. (transitive)
