magic - is the practice or action of using charms, spells, or rituals to produce supernatural effects.
spell - word or formula believed to have magic power

When you do magic, you cast spells.
Spell is the name of the specific action (i.e. spell of charm) and magic is more global.

"Magic" is a metaparadigm. "Spell" is a specific application of "magic".
"Cookery" is a metaparadigm. A "recipe" is a specific application of "cookery".
