what does "blow it open" mean? example: why china football consistantly underperformed in world football, it is because it doesn't have the culture of the star taking the game by the scruff of the neck to blow it open. my question is what "blow sth open" means? could you explain this phrase in a figurative way? one or two examples would be appreciated, thanks

In an athletic competition, the expression "blow it open" means to outperform the opposition to the extent that the contest's outcome is no longer in doubt. "The home team's defense in the third quarter blew it open".
