what does "scholarly detachment " mean here?
They exuded an air of scholarly detachment while watching the chameleon's jaws open and dislocate. Thanks

the chameleon's jaws being dislocated is probably not a very pleasant thing to look at, but being scholars they didn't show any sign of emotional involvement or reaction. Simply, scholarly detachment means not reacting to something emotionally because of being some serious scientist..
i guess that's mostly it
