Do you know that today New York City is informally called "The Big Apple"? Why?

The origin of the term is debated. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Apple . The name is a bit more than informal, since the reference was adopted in the 1970s by the New York Convention and Visitors Bureau.
