What does 'tan' mean? Her hair and skin and whole life were so calm and tan. What does 'tan' mean? Is it like 'poise'?

Put you out there in the sun and your skin becomes darker, which is called "you tan" or " the sun tans you", but I am not sure it is a chemical reaction or physical reaction.. The subtext is that she lives a carefree,relaxed and laid back lifestyle,
