"I AM aware it was a mistake." Aware is an adjective. Realize is a verb.

To realize = to come to the conclusion with your own reasoning
You realize it was a mistake if you use independent thinking no matter who gave you facts that helped build the conclusion
Aware = known
You may know it was a mistake because someone explained why it was a mistake
Of course:
After you have realized the mistake, you will also know it is a mistake.

"I realize it was a mistake" is about about knowing and caring and perhaps not going to repeat it again
"I am aware it was a mistake" is about knowing and thats about it
Interesting...its a difficult one to describe~both being very similar

aware is to know of something.. i was walking through the field when i was aware of a bull following me. Realize means to grasp or understand clearly...They did not realize the risk that was involved. He realized a lifelong dream by winning an Olympic medal.
