Our neighbor Esthella pulled me away from the grave and took me in her arms. I tried to hide in her woolly perfume, her frizzy helmet of hair sheltering me from the procession of shovelers, but the rocks kept on banging baning banging on the wooden lid.

Do you mean a "woody perfume?" A woody perfume smells like sandalwood, drier and cedar wood. It is aromatic and citrusy.

It's figurative: the scent of the perfume is so thick and cloying it may as well be wool. Think of clouds of scent and you're on the right track.
