In Arabic language , You can use many sentences to make a greeting ..
Essalamu 3alaikum ( Literally it means : peace upon you )
Note : you can say it for 1 person too ( with عليكم )
it's weird to say السلام عليك , but it's not false !
And when you reply , you say :
Wa 3alaikumu Ssalam Wa Rahmatu LAhi Ta3aalaa Wa Barakaatuhu
see ? to reply we use also عليكم even it's one person who said Salam
..
There are other greetings , they are less used compared to Salam :
Sabaah Lkhair = Good Morning
Masaa' Lkhair = Good Evening
Hope it helps :D

Hello, As Gapi said : it can use for one or lots of people (السلام عليكم) ---- (السلام عليك) ---- C'est rare dont on utilise cette expression, et pour vous éclairer, en Arabe, on n'a pas les expressions formels ou informels, ainsi une chose ---- السلام عليكم ------ il se dit aussi si tu s'adresse aux femmes, donc, pas la peine de dire ------- السلام عليكن à plus
