In English, the word "dowry" means "the money, goods, or estate that a woman brings to her husband in marriage, or a gift of money or property by a man to or for his bride." The English language is made from words from many different languages, so the meanings of the words stay nearly the same. The biggest challenge is using the words properly in each culture.
Hope this helps! :)
